    Power and wavelength polarization bistability with very wide hysteresis cycles in a 1550nm-VCSEL subject to orthogonal optical injection

    We have measured optical power and wavelength polarization bistability in a 1550nm-Vertical Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) subject to orthogonally-polarized optical injection into the orthogonal polarization of the fundamental transverse mode. Optical bistability with very wide hysteresis cycles, up to four times wider than previously reported results has been measured for both the optical power and wavelength domain. We also report the experimental observation of three different shapes of polarization bistability, anticlockwise, clockwise and X-Shape bistability, all of them with wide hysteresis cycles. This rich variety of behaviour at the important wavelength of 1550 nm offers promise for the use of VCSELs for all-optical signal processing and optical switching/routing applications. ©2009 Optical Society of America

    Optical neuron using polarisation switching in a 1550nm-VCSEL

    We report a new approach to mimic basic functionalities of a neuron using a 1550 nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) which is based on the polarisation switching (PS) that can be induced in these devices when subject to polarised optical injection. Positive and negative all-optical threshold operations are demonstrated experimentally using external optical injection into the two orthogonal polarizations of the fundamental transverse mode. The polarisation of the light emitted by the device is used to determine the state of the VCSEL-Neuron, active (orthogonal) or inactive (parallel). This approach forms a new way to reproduce optically the response of a neuron to an excitatory and an inhibitory stimulus. © 2010 Optical Society of America

    Comprehensive experimental analysis of nonlinear dynamics in an optically-injected semiconductor laser

    We present the first comprehensive experimental study, to our knowledge, of the routes between nonlinear dynamics induced in a semiconductor laser under external optical injection based on an analysis of time-averaged measurements of the optical and RF spectra and phasors of real-time series of the laser output. The different means of analysis are compared for several types of routes and the benefits of each are discussed in terms of the identification and mapping of the nonlinear dynamics. Finally, the results are presented in a novel audio/video format that describes the evolution of the dynamics with the injection parameters. © 2011 Author(s)

    Knowledge, innovation, and the role of government in the circular bioeconomy

    Competitiveness and innovation performance depend not only on the skills that the different actors of an innovation system can find, develop, and exploit internally, but also on the efficiency with which they can access external sources of knowledge and skills related to technologies and markets. This acquires greater importance in the case of the bioeconomy because it is a sector that is intensive in knowledge and innovation, and because of its position at the confluence of several technological areas. As a result, there has been growing interest in understanding the interventions in the innovation system that are more likely to positively impact its role in the creation and delivery of value to markets and society. Thus, for this study, system dynamics modelling methods are used to examine the Andalusian Circular Bioeconomy Strategy. An analysis is made of how knowledge and learning influence the performance of the circular bioeconomy-related innovation system, and 22 leverage points are preliminarily identified where interventions could enhance strengths and overcome weaknesses. Overall, our preliminary findings show that the role of government in supporting learning and knowledge-related processes is key for the development of the circular bioeconomy due to the pervasiveness of information asymmetry in the sector

    Controlled propagation of spiking dynamics in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers : towards neuromorphic photonic networks

    We report experimentally and in theory on the controllable propagation of spiking regimes between two interlinked Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). We show that spiking patterns generated in a first transmitter VCSEL (T-VCSEL) are communicated to a second receiver VCSEL (R-VCSEL) which responds by firing the same spiking response. Importantly, the spiking regimes from both devices had analogous temporal and amplitude characteristics, including equal number of spikes fired, same spike and inter-spike temporal durations and similar spike intensity properties. These responses are analogous to the spiking communication patterns of biological neurons yet at sub-nanosecond speeds, this is several (up to 8) orders of magnitude faster than the timescales of biological neurons. We have also carried out numerical simulations reproducing with high degree of agreement the experimental findings. These results obtained with inexpensive, commercially available VCSELs operating at important telecom wavelengths (1300nm) offer great prospects for the scaling of emerging VCSEL-based photonic neuronal models into network configurations for use in novel neuromorphic photonic systems. This offers high potentials for non-traditional computing paradigms beyond digital systems and able to operate at ultrafast speeds

    Nonlinear dynamics induced by parallel and orthogonal optical injection in 1550 nm Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs)

    We report a first experimental study of the nonlinear dynamics appearing in a 1550 nm single-mode VCSEL subject to parallel and to orthogonal optical injection. For the first time to our knowledge we report experimentally measured stability maps identifying the boundaries between regions of different nonlinear dynamics for both cases of polarized injection. A rich variety of nonlinear behaviours, including periodic (limit cycle, period doubling) and chaotic dynamics have been experimentally observed. ©2010 Optical Society of America
